How do we find out what's going on in the world?

When I hear Globalization I immediately think of words like progress and communication. Why these words you ask? I think these words best describe the essence and importance of globalization in our world today. Progress because the process of globalization helps people to improve their lives. Technology is also part of globalization and technology is a sign of progress. Communication is also improved in our lives because globalization is about breaking down walls or hindrances of countries to have better interactions between countries. But of course globalization is not just something that will pop out of nowhere; it has its own history. Some may say that globalization just started during 90’s but researchers have said that globalization already started when people started trading and interacting from their country to others. Different researchers have different perspective of who started globalization but I don’t think it’s really an American phenomenon. I think people have associated globalization with Americans because the term was defined by an American entrepreneur. But as I’ve searched the history of globalization, it is pretty clear that globalization was started by different people or countries. Different countries have made the first step in gaining their independence and having their own economic systems that started globalization in the modern world. I think globalization is a massive or general fact for all countries, I don’t think there can only be one country that has influenced all countries. I think all countries that have seek progress in the past, present and future have started globalization.

Globalization is a worldwide phenomenon because of the simple fact that it involves every country and everyone. So you may think that globalization is a part of world history implying that they’re the same. But I don’t think they’re completely similar because I think the history of the world is more complex and more defined. Unlike when it comes to the history of globalization, it’s only focusing on one aspect of a country or the world; it is only focusing on the start of trading among countries. And I also think that history of the world is about all countries. History of the world talks about the beginning of the world, the evolution of man and many other things. But history of globalization may also be focusing on all countries also but not the whole history of the country and also not every country is mentioned. Those countries that have made a major impact on the world of globalizations are the only ones mentioned.

Now, let’s try to look at globalization in our modern world. I’ve noticed that when you talk about globalization, big or rich countries are the only ones involved or mentioned. Countries that are also technologically advanced are also the most popular when it comes to globalization. And when you say globalization, people have thought that it’s all about the modern world. So in some way, I think globalization can be about modernism. But I think these two words are different in a sense that globalization is not just about technological advancement, it is about the progress of the nation in a whole. When we say modernism, it involves modern thoughts and practices, people are moving into a new behavior, leaving traditions and moving out of their old lives to go to a more modern world. But I don’t think that’s the case when it comes to globalization. Countries have progressed economically but people in those countries are still embracing their culture, old beliefs and own traditions like India or Korea.

I also think that globalization have progressed in many years when it comes to communication. People all over the world are capable of connecting and interacting with each other with the help of internet, cellphones and also media. These three things can be found even with small and poor countries. But I think some parts of the globe are still not fully globalized like Africa. There are some parts of Africa that are still oblivious to the progress the world is undertaking. We can communicate with them but they don’t have the resources to communicate with us. They haven’t received full progress yet when it comes to their economic aspect.

All in all, upon discussing the past and present of globalization in our world, I think globalization is a good thing as long as we focus on the important aspects. Progress is not wrong as long as people know how to handle progress. The major issue of the world today is global warming. And in some way, globalization has played a little part in this issue, because I think people have focused more on progress and their own personal gain that they have lost sight of progress while also thinking of the environment. And now that the world is slowly dying, people are using globalization to help revive this dying earth. So I think globalization has its good and bad aspects but it’s up to the people on how they will make use of globalization in this world.
